Volunteer Opportunities
The Department of Health Services (DHS) Volunteer/Student Intern Services (VSI) Office offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities designed to match your interests, skills, and availability while supporting health services throughout Sacramento County.
DHS has a long-standing commitment to community engagement and volunteerism. By partnering with community members, we strengthen our ability to provide high-quality services to those we serve. Volunteers play an important role across multiple DHS divisions, with opportunities that range from clerical and administrative support to program-based and medical roles.
Medical volunteer opportunities are also available for those interested in supporting clinical environments. Positions range from assisting in clinic offices to providing licensed medical services through programs such as our Immunization Assistance Program (IAP) and the SPIRIT Project. Opportunities vary throughout the year based on program needs.
SPIRIT Project Volunteer Opportunity
Medical practitioners (active or retired) with a valid license and in good standing can volunteer their services at County clinics or provide services through their own offices as part of the SPIRIT (Sacramento Physicians' Initiative to Reach Out, Innovate, and Teach) Project. Contact the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society for additional information and an application at (916) 453-0254. Locations and hours vary and are flexible.
Medical Volunteer Opportunities

How Do I Apply to Volunteer?
Read each volunteer job description. Make sure it's a good match for you!
Click on the link to download the Volunteer/Intern application form, or if you are a licensed medical professional, complete the Medical Volunteer/Intern application form. You may email the application form and your resume to the Volunteer and Student Intern Office.
The VSI Office will contact you regarding your application. You will be invited to an interview if there's a potential position that aligns with your schedule, training and education background, or skill set. A meeting with the program supervisor will be arranged to give you the opportunity to visit the site and ask questions about the volunteer/internship position before a final decision is made.
Please note that the availability of all volunteers and internship positions varies throughout the year. Volunteers/interns will be required to pass a criminal background check before commencing their placements. Some volunteer/intern positions that involve driving will also require a DMV record and proof of car insurance.
